Awards Season- Red Carpet Makeup 2014

by Anne Hutton Makeup and Beauty, Carlow

With the awards season over and done with, I've decided to compile a photo-list of my favourite red-carpet makeups, and some simple tips on how to copy the star's gorgeous makeup looks. Of course I couldn't resist adding a couple of doozies at the end...just my own opinion as a makeup artist.

In no particular order, the awards for Best Red Carpet Makeup go to.....

Cate Blanchett at the Oscars, looking flawless in neutral tones, with glowing peachy cheeks. She has lash extensions on to enhance and open her eyes, and barely-there lipstick. Try a shimmery peach blusher and lots of mascara for Cate's look.

Naomi Watts at the Oscars, sporting a strong red lip, and bang-on-trend with an even stronger brow. Try out your red lippie with minimal eye makeup, and get your brow pencil out and fill out your brows to mimic this look.
Amber Heard at The Golden Globes, showing off her beautiful green eyes with smokey bronze eyeshadow, complimented perfectly with a nude lipstick. It's all about the blending with this look. Layering browns and bronze toned eyeshadows until you have a full-on smokey look like Amber. Finish with lots of macara.

Emma Watson makes it onto my list twice! Firstly for her "old Hollywood" red lipped Oscars look. And secondly for her more sultry BAFTA look. The difference? Paler skin, less eye-makeup and a strong red lip for the Oscars. For the BAFTA's it looks like she had a spray-tan, and her eyebrows and eye-makeup are stronger, and her lips are a more muted red.

Well now, she may have had a few "little jobs" done, but I think Bette looked just fab at the Oscars this year. Her makeup was age-appropriate, with emphasis on her eyes, and plump apricot-toned cheeks.

Lupita Nyong'o looked radiant at the BAFTAs, with shimmering skin, and a pop of colour on her lips. Her big brown eyes are contrasted beautifully with green-toned smokey eyeshadow - a firm favourite of the actress.Try an illuminating liquid/skin highlighter dabbed all over, or mixed in with your foundation for glowing skin like Lupita.
Flying the flag for super-glam mature ladies at the Golden Globes were Helen Mirren and Judi Dench. Helen is one of my favourite red carpet regulars, always looking elegant and smart, and she has made it onto my favourites lists before. And Judi looks amazing, with her cheeky grin, lumious skin and classic eye makeup.

And now for the not-so-alluring makeups of 2014. The makeup "razzie" awards go to....

I'm sorry Lily, but this is just terrible. Surely when attending the BAFTAs, you have access to the best makeup artists in Britain? Lily's messy black eyes, poorly-shaped eyebrows and her dry looking lips make this the worst look of the season.
I love Jennifer Lawrence, I love her acting, her attitude and her looks, but I don't love this makeup. Her lipstick is crooked and wobbly, and the colour does not suit her, her lash extensions are crooked and it all looks a bit '80s. Meow... yes I know!!

Ahhhh, so now I've got that out of my system, I'd better get back to work! I hope you've enjoyed browsing, and have picked up a few tips along the way.
