How to Enjoy Shopping

by Elaine Scully Styling

So many of my personal shopping clients admit they hate shopping. The majority of the time it's because they don't know what they are shopping for. They hit the shops thinking they have nothing to wear and that they need everything from jeans, to tops, to shoes etc.. If you walk into a shop in this frame of mind, you won't know where to start and naturally will find the entire experience overwhelming and unsuccessful.

Everyone makes impulse purchases, but most of the time when we shop for items other than clothing - for example for food, electrical items, household items and so on - we know exactly what we need. In a lot of cases, particularly when food shopping we have a shopping list. So what's to stop us having a shopping list for clothes? I find it brilliant - it means every time I splash out on something new I always come home with a piece that I can instantly make outfits from. Every new purchase adds more value and outfit options to my wardrobe. KNOW WHAT YOU NEED

Create this list the same way you make your food shopping list.....instead of checking what your kitchen presses are lacking, suss out what's missing from your wardrobe.....
Do you need some warm layers?
A smart blazer to dress up your denims or your casual dresses?
Lacking the perfect pair of jeans?
Neutral boots to team with your everyday clothes?
Some new statement tops?

Of course once you have your list this doesn't mean your next trip to your local shops involves ticking everything off this list - Prioritise your needs. Denims are one of the toughest items to shop for and take patience, time, and lots and lots of trying on. So if denims are on your list you must ensure they get a shopping trip all of their own!

Another advantage of knowing what it is you are shopping for is you don't have to rummage through every rail in every store. If you are shopping for new tops, know what shops are worth visiting and when you are in each shop only look at tops. Don't get distracted, or worse still overwhelmed by the vast selection of clothing and accessories in each shop. You are focused - You are a Smart Shopper - You will Enjoy Shopping - You will have Something to wear :-)

Happy Shopping!!
